Am thinking of making a window opening in the ceiling of my bathroom - the whole house has a flat roof. Am a bit nervous though as the roof is superwatertight and so I am worried about opening myself up to horrors of leakage by gouging out such a hole. Anyone had any experience of doing this? Is it a big job? Sorry, cannot tell you how the roof is constructed at this stage (which I presume is fairly vital info to have!). thanks!

There are several proper ways to cover a flat roof and thus a roofer needs to ascertain the type used and to make good properly....not DIY, in my opinion

a couple of questions for you, what makes you say the roof is super watertight, does it have a high spec covering,or is it just that it doesn't leak.how old is the covering,if fairly new, cutting into it may invalidate any guarantee.secondly,it may sound daft, but what is the window for,is it to look out of,or to let light into the room,if the latter, you can get a dome type contraption(sorry i can't think of the proper name for them off the top of my head).but the idea is to magnify the light as it comes in through a flexible aluminium sleeve thus reducing the size of the hole needed in the roof.but i am not sure if these things are suitable for flat roofs.

thanks everyone. To answer bendylow - it's for light and a bit of looking out of - so although sunpipe looks very interesting (thanks Nige) it won't do it for me from the aesthetic point of view (and yes I see that they can be used on flat roofs).

Roof is watertight coz it is relatively new - less than 10 years old so still under guarantee, so good point made there.

Guess I will just have to go away and think about it some more and weigh up the pros and cons.

If you only want to let light into the building then why not go for something like a roof dome? You can get oval domes and pyramid shaped domes and they're even available in different tints.
Best to ask a roofer for advice.
Also if you start altering the roof by cutting holes into it won't that invalidate the warranty anyway?
