Yay, or nay ? I want to install a 400L cylinder as a thermal battery with solar but no space indoors. There is the attic but that is very far away from the boiler (soon to be ASHP) and 400L is a lot of weight). The location of the cylinder will be about 1m from the boiler albeit outdoors and right next to the ASHP. Is this doable ? what possible issues must I deal with ? A bit strange no one designs cylinders to be installable outdoors considering not everyone has the space.

I cannot see any problem apart from its casing and electronics are designed to be in the dry.

I will need to try to work out what its function is going to be.

A friend has a 300 li cylinder as a buffer on his swiming pool boiler. With about 40 cu m of buffer water in the pool I never understood what that is for.

If it's to be out in the elements then as they come no, wouldn't recommend it.

Could it be retrofitted to be - probably - small lean to structure to protect it.

I could move into the shed? that is about 10m from the house though.

Better to build a small lean-to structure to enclose the cylinder. That would also allow you to apply normal lagging as it will be kept dry. A cylinder outside will soon get its lagging soaked with rainwater and ineffective.
