yes the fairy liquid has a detergent in it and causes damage to pipes / hose apparently
never actually seen it though and i've been in the business since 1980

But why should it not be gas tight?

manufacturing fault, perforated or perished hose, bit of grit / swarf / whatever on the thread, bad crimp etc... any number of reasons..

why would a freshly installed cable need to be IR tested?

The connection at the cooker end is iron, isn't it?

and the bit that screws onto the connection?

So if I ask the maker why it doesn't come with a hose they'd say "because we can't guarantee to have made the thing properly, and we rely on the RGI inspecting it at install time to save you from disaster".

no they'd say that as there are differing installation methods in the different countries they manufacture for, and even then different installation methods within each country, there would be 50 different numbers for the same cooker but with different hoses.

Washing up liquid contains salt, which will encourage corrosion/rust of metal pipes and fittings.
