no you can tape and skim the joints. take your time and sand back.
whether you can just frame fix or need to pack with dabs depends on the quality of your brick. just check each panel with a level as it goes on and don't get carried away over tightening the frame fixers.
.3 - .4 will be 100 years+ better.
but Windows and drafts might defeat the object.
