When ever you take out insurance on a vehicle one of the key questions they ALWAYS ask is;

"Have there been any modifications to the vehicle?"

This means ANY modifications to the manufacturers specification for that particular vehicle. It does not ask if you did the mod or someone else, it asks for ANY.
If you fail to declare it your insurance is invalid and will not pay out in the event of a claim. It means you are paying premiums for nothing. It also means you are driving whilst un-insured and can be prosecuted by the police.

This information was supplied by a friend who works for LV Insurance.
The decision is yours.

But plugging a device into the ciggy lighter isn't a modification. Would you state; A mod is using a satnav, that is plugged in?

On the otherhand, if the device is hardwired, and isn't fused correctly, and the circuit developed a fault, and caused the vehicle to burn out....would that still be the case?

So tell the insurer.

You could fit an aftermarket alarm, or horn, and not wire it correctly...

A few years ago I was at the VW vanfest down at the 3 counties showground, a guy bought a CD player and wired it up himself, dont know what happened or why but his electrics set on fire and his van was burnt out in minutes.
