Why do you need the jailbreak?

Not my phone so can't say exactly what it does as I am not into this sort of thing. Bought it from a workmate as a present for a friend and she is delighted with it.
Phone is sim free / network free and is currently used as payg with Orange so I think that is the main reason for the "jailbreak".

You can't live anywhere near me if you are happy with the Orange signal!!
Afaik, Jailbreaking is to do with allowing non-apple approved apps to run on the phone (such as cracked or pirated software), it has nothing to do with the sim lock.

Not entirely true. Yes if you have a jailbroken iPhone then you can run pirated apps on it. There is however a mass off genuine apps available for the jailbreak community that aren't pirated but are available in the jailbreak community because they can't get into the official AppStore. Take the new notifications feature in iOS 5. That was originally a tweak developed by a developer for the jailbreak community.

Having a jailbroken iPhone DOES (depending on your iOS version) allow you to remove the carrier lock and enable you to use your phone on any network

You mean apps which aren't politically correct, violate one of the many petty and pointless restrictions Apple impose, or in any way compete with any of Apple's own functionality on the device, because of course competition is not to be allowed.
