Irish music

Apparently Rory almost became a member of the Rolling Stones

And could well have been had not richards been bombed out of his head and Rory had not had to catch a flight to Japan

Jimmy Hendrix mentioned him as one of his guitar influences

I need to be careful not to mention names but someone either in the band or associated with the band lives in Goring on Thames, which by coincidence, George Michael used to live in. There was a George Michael tribute weekend, might have been what would have been his 60th.
Anyway, village hall and maybe the pub, main attraction was a George Michael tribute act and several similar acts. But my relative was told by his band mate that they were playing a 1 hour slot. My relative hinted that a Rory Gallagher tribute band was maybe not suitable for a George Michael tribute weekend, his band mate said 'no they want other music as well'.

Cut a long story short, me relative is on stage, playing some mean blues harp and belting out some real dirty blues whilst the guitarist is making his guitar weep and all the while, some bloke in the audience, keeps shouting out 'DO CARELESS WHISPER'.

Sounds eerily familiar. When I was a child at family weddings and funerals, once the Guinness had flowed for a while, the 'rebel music' would come out.
It's an easy refrain to slip into any tune, so it becomes an insistent earworm - said to date from the Jacobite Rebellion, but who really knows? ( the Dork probably. ) I get the impression Ken Loach waited for just the right moment when the mist fell on that spot where the IRA marched to the ambush, summoning the spirits of their predecessors who fought for Independence: "welcome home..."
Padraig Pearse wrote the lyrics to the modern version and if you're wondering why it sounds eerily familiar, hum the tune to 'what shall we do with the drunken sailor' and see how it fits.

S'allright.

Loved that song when it came out, not until much much later did I hear the original Irish folk version. Not everybody's cup of tea but just as good IMO.

Blup

Saw Thin Lizzy a couple o' times but never heard 'em play the Black Rose - damn shame Phil Lynott couldn't get he monkey off his back.
