Hi All,

Im due to replace a window with French door in a Victorian terraced property and wonder whether a concrete Lintel will be required above the patio doors or if the patio doors themselves will provide the required support.

Below is an internal and external image of where the patio doors will be installed.

The builder mentioned that the external brickwork should also provide the required support

Will a concrete Lintel be required here?

Thanks

Will that be part of other works you are doing to the house, as I cannot see why you would want to put French doors there with the lean to door being as it is. Also the opening size of the window is going to make it difficult to have doors wide enough that will be practical to use. As for the lintel question you really need structural engineers opinion.

Yes this is part of a wider plan of works for this area of the house.

The current kitchen is quite small so I am removing the internal wall which you can see to the right to open this area up into the dining room as well as blocking up the current exit to create space for a U-shaped Kitchen.

So in the following image I am removing the internal wall (highlighted Green), blocking up the current exit (highlighted blue), and creating a new exit with french doors where the current window is (yellow).

I will also change the direction the Lean-to door opens so its not opening onto the new French Doors

As long as the arching masonry is sound, then I see no reason to add a lintel. Your only issues are that the arch is very shallow so prone to failure if any of those mortar joints deteriorate.
I'm guessing you'll design the French doors so that they header out at 2.1m and have a glazed fanlight above?

The arch will be ok to support the outer 'skin' of the wall and there will be a timber lintel supporting the inner part. Why bother changing them?
