I have no clue about cars. BMW 1 series m sport 2019.

So a few weeks back my engine light came on and so I took it to a local independent garage by my work. Turns out I needed my PCV valve changing, which apparently in my car is built into the rocker cover and so it all needed changing. This set me back 740, I had no issues with this.

However then literally a day later my car low oil warning message comes up, move my car off the drive and lo and behold a big oil leak on the driveway. Here is where the issues begin, before being aware of the leak I notified my garage of a strange burning oily kinda smell was told this was normal after this repair. Obviously upon noticing the leak I informed the garage, however by then they had closed for the next 2 weeks for Christmas. I was wary to go to another garage because I thought well if this issue was their fault it shall be rectified free of charge. I Was told to leave my car in front of their shutters and they would try their best to get someone out to it before they opened up again 2 weeks later, this didn’t happen annoying but fair enough I guess over Christmas. Now I’m under the impression that this was something of their doing during the original repair and so they were at fault. Now finally my car has been seen to and I’m told the oil leak was caused by the cam shaft sensor seal perishing, which they say is not their fault, which may be true since I’m clueless. So for this, an oil service and 2 hours labour (apparently should have been 4 but this is them being nice) I have an additional bill of £310. Now I’ve disputed this because obviously the circumstances seem quite coincidental, plus not having a car for 2 weeks and they’ve been very unprofessional in dealing with me: I’ve had to constantly get in touch with them for updates, original repair ended up 740 when quoted 640. This kind of stuff. So basically what I’m asking and trying to wrap my head around is this, they’re explanation is essentially the work they carried out was done properly. In fixing the PCV valve the engine has now been cleared out of gunk or debris so the oil pressure and fluid pressures are now working at the correct (higher) levels, this in turn has caused the cam shaft sensor seal to rupture. So basically the original repair although carried out properly has led to another issue, which is hard for me to accept although I can kinda understand. Should this not have been something they checked for or tested out this specific seal before returning my car originally? Because by the sounds of what they’re saying this is something that can happen after so surely it should be checked or tested beforehand? I understand had it have been found out the first time I would have had to pay and that would have been more acceptable but after all this hassle and 2 weeks without my car I don’t feel comfortable paying this just yet until I understand more, thanks

It's going to be hard to prove either way whether they were at fault (quite possibly) or not. I would poss move on with this if the car is now working properly and not waste my life chasing the garage as you probably won't get anywhere.

However, I would say don't use that garage, or any garage, just because it close to where you work. Ask friends, family, colleaguges, etc to recommend a good garage. There are specialist BMW forums - ask if their members if they can recommend a good BMW independent specialist in your area. Failing any of these, the Good Garage Scheme may be better than nothing - search for one in your area. Entrusting your pride and joy and hard-earned cash to a garage is always a risk. You can lower the risk if you do some legwork, so you'll get a better outcome next time.

I have a BMW 1 series E88 with working indicators ;). There are very few jobs that need a BMW specialist. I use a local family run garage that all my family use and that we trust. I normally get charged less than the estimate based on the time actually taken. Not that the car goes in very often. Usually for those jobs that are easier on a ramp, hp fuel pump, gearbox oil change etc.

Find a garage that you trust and don't worry too much about specialists. I am a member of the baby bmw forum and there are lots of knowledgeable folk on there especially for diagnostics and programming.

Strewth, I've fitted a new PCV diaphragm and spring for less than a tenner on an early 116.......I'm wondering which engine this one is?
John :)

Not sure where to start on this

Difficult to prove or disprove anything. Take the car for a 2nd opinion maybe.

I'm not saying the garage doing the job have done anything wrong, or done the job right.

Very few garages set out to do any job wrong.

But seems to be a bit more to this than can be worked out without looking at the car
