£85 plus VAT (£102) to cut this filler spout down from 9 to 4 inches.

Local bathroom shop in my road sent the spout to some company where their engineer is going to cut it down and rethread it. I paid £100 for the whole bath filler. I'll get the cut down spout on thursday and pay the £102 for the custom job. Ok, so it suits me to have the job done as it's the only way to keep the filler where it is (instead of paying the builder £150 to remove the bath and move the filler to the front end) and not be constantly hitting it while using the bath and shower. It was just too long, almost reaching the centre of the bath.

But do you think that price is a bit of a rip off just to cut and thread a piece of chrome covered metal, or is it a tricky job?

Who put the silicone around the bath?

Andy

Lol, I know. I already mentioned it to one of the guys working at my house and he said it's temporary and is going to be done properly once everything is in. Although I don't know why it needed to be temporary.

For your spout problem, the engineer will have to cut a section out of the spout, rethread both ends, fit an insert, dress the join and then have it rechromed....he must be a bloody clever lad! :p
There will be shenannigans though if the spout has two channels inside though, hot and cold.
......or have I got this wrong?
John :)

Edit.....no disrespect mate, but the whole job doesn't look that clever

Will he need to thread both ends? I thought he might be cutting the spout and just threading the 4" bit to be screwed onto the hose fixing already on the wall?

Sure - I can't see how the fixing is from here, but if he's ok with that, then its fine.
John :)

Well, hopefully it'll be ok. :) I'll be pee'd off if I spend £100 for a crap job. I hope he does do re-chroming (and should do for that price) as I don't want any exposed metal to be able to rust. The guy in the shop said it's not proper solid brass, he says it's a chinese make (hudson reed) so I've no idea what kind of metal lies beneath the chrome.

It looks like that spout threads into some sort of brass threaded wall plate behind the chrome face.....although I would have expected to see some sort of flange unless the spout screws on to a male thread projecting outwards.
No matter - the theory is that the machine man will cut the spout to length, and then rethread the end using a die, or a tap if a female thread is required.
Either way, he wont need to rechrome which is just as well if the constituents of the parent metal aren't known.
I hope it goes well for you - but I've had some dreadful experiences with chinese stuff.....(never buy Aldi taps  )
John :)

temporary silicone? that doesn't sound clever, replaced silicone never goes as nice as fresh new clean surface silicone..

i would have saved the £102 & put it towards getting a professional tiler

It`s a London job - it`d cost you £20 here in the sticks
