Hi.

My mother wants to get a new CH boiler. Although the old CH boiler in question is still going strong she's been told that soon BG repair engineers may "not be able to get the parts for it."

Another thing to add is that in the set up for her house there are 2 boilers hooked up to 2 sets of CH radiators. A succession of gas engineers down the years have told her that one of the boilers is powerful enough to heat all the radiators in the house and therefore she is wasting gas and money. So the quote should be for fitting new pipes to get all the radiators on one system and for fitting a new boiler provided by BG.

The boiler price quoted to her is modest enough at £606.44 but the overall quote is a mega £9,350.49

My mother was told scaffolding would be needed as either the steam must now come out of the chimney or it no longer can come out of the chimney. I'm not sure which. I think it's the latter because I've never seen any steam coming out of the side of the house so I'm guessing it comes out of the chimney at the moment.

There are various other jobs (and charges) that the BG engineer deems necessary. I see for example, that she is being quoted for radiator thermostatic valves for 11 radiators when she certainly didn't have this in mind before ringing BG.

Can someone tell me if the quote is at all reasonable for a new boiler and rearranging the pipes so all radiators work off the one boiler?

Thanks for any help.

I'll upload a copy of the quote to tinypic.com

Really need to know what the existing boiler are. May be worth keeping.

I would ask the rep back and challenge him on the quote. I realise they are quoting for linking the 2 existing systems together but they have quoted for 105m of pipework (not including the gas rerun) Are the 2 systems on different sides of the street???

Definitely get further quotes.

May not be cost effective to link the systems. Maybe just replace the boilers?

I'm afraid some of the HSA's have very little hands on experience.

Hope this helps

thats ridiculous.
From what I can make out the quote is to relocate new boiler with vertical kit, covert from gravity to fully pumped and seal the system.
replace hot water cylinder and trvs.

9 big ones lol tell you what, take £2k off it and I'll come up there and do it myself and throw in 5years gtee on everything

Stop asking stupid questions, get 2 other quotes from local installers for comparison to get the answer.

The quote mentions:- Disc and flush and refix 13 rads, this could well be a one pipe system(as you cannot sucessfully flush rads in situ on a one pipe system) and would explain all the additional pipework.Ask what the 8 hrs additional labour is for?

That's well expensive! Where in Yorkshire are you? I'm in Yorkshire too, knock a couple of grand off and i'll have a crack at it! ;)
