The "french/italian paradox" No paradox, it's simply that they enjoy life, rather than taking it so damned seriously. Go to a french/italian market, eat all the "fly blown produce" drink the local gut rot plonk... but enjoy yourself and smile.... guarantee you'll live longer. (Not sure about the 20 Gauloise cigs though

I dunno, if we acted like Italian men we would die of internal facial bleeding... Seriously, what is accepted there as being "a bit cheeky" would get you punched by an English woman!

I do enjoy myself in Rome, you can just chat to random women and ask them out for the sake of it, who cares if they say yes or no? Not like over here where if you just talk to a girl it is usually totally misconstrued... "Sorry love, just wanted to know the way to the post office!"

I think I moderated my original post pretty well ! Just relax, stop counting the units / stop watching the clock / don't keep up with the Jones ... it's really not worth it. (Not aimed at anyone in particular!!).... remember, I was born in the summer of lurrrrve!

I was born in the Thatcher years... does it show?

You are right about that, if we all just chill, winston, then stress levels decrease. I don't think anyone was ever killed in Italy for cutting someone else up at a roundabout. They just shout and wave hands and insult their mama's pizza, instead of bottling it up and boiling away for years before exploding in one massive rage.

Either that or it is the difference between our Viking spirit and their Roman spirit.

I think you'd probably find that most "English" are complete mongrels.

Exactly, hence the "viking spirit" in all of us... :D

There is no such a thing as a "pure" Briton, there never was! We're all a bit Celt, Gaul, Norman, Angle, Saxon, Viking, Roman, and who knows how many more bits. Humans only migrated to the British Isles a few thousand years ago.

Perhaps they could use that in anti-racism campaigns? Point out that we are all immigrants in one way or another.

I am told that in New Zealand the English and Maoris are very intermixed, reason being the Maoris have only been there a few hundred years longer than the English so they are all recent immigrants. They don't have any problems with racism or racial insensitivity (people are very respectful of each other's cultures and history). According to Kiwis I know anyway.

We have no problem, just rants from a tiny overcrowded Island.

The Govn is about to allow councils to 'fine' us for not recycling our waste ... ie if the council provides means of recycle and we should misplace a can into our garbage .. then fine us !!.. Whatever next ?
May find some WMD's who knows ?

Never watched Once were warriors then. The Maoris claim that the English stole their land and the English claim that they were too lazy to keep hold of it. Similar to Aborigines in Australia. There's a lot of tension or at least there was when I was last there about 5/6 yrs ago.

Glad I qualified that with "I am told"

Seriously, a mate of mine who spent a few years in Australia and a few in NZ told me that the Maoris and English are quite happy together in NZ, because the Maoris didn't mind sharing the islands (due to the migrations still being in relatively recent history when the English arrived), and also because they were quite confident as a people.

However, the Aborigines in Australia sat back whilst the English dessimated them. Very different culture, much less warrior-oriented than the Maoris. And unfortunately, to their detriment, very trusting.

Who said I don't drink alcohol?

True, I drink 99% water, 1% other cold drinks, plus the ocassional peppermint tea, but I am known to have real ale or single malts every once in a blue moon.

Only 99% water? You should drink Lemon Ice Tea, that is 99.76% water! What with chlorination and everything, Lemon Ice Tea is probably purer water than tap water!

I thought he did too, only drinks at Christmas and even then it is in moderation.

I am wondering if all the experiments were totally unbiased. If they just asked if you drink red wine and how much, that doesn't take into account the fact that those not drinking wine might be drinking beer, or scotch.

Is it healthier to drink 2 glasses of red wine every night, or is it healthier to never drink? I would think that never drinking is far healthier, in the same way that not smoking at all is far healthier than smoking low-tar cigarettes.

actually I think it's healthier (in that you live longer) if you drink a small amount of alcohol. It lowers your risk of coronary heart disease. Obviously increases your risk of liver damage but on balance all other things being equal those that drink a little probably live longer than those that don't drink at all.
