isolating water supply

I am changing the bathroom and as there are no isolation valves fitted to any of the pipework in the bathroom I need to turn the hot and cold supplies off.

The cylinder in the airing cupboard has some gate valves which I turned clockwise but none of these turned the supplies off....

Which is the quickest and best way to do this without having to drain everything

To turn off the hot supply, there should be a gate valve on the pipe that is feeding the lowest point of your cylinder. If there is not one visable on that pipe in the airing cupboard trace it up into the loft, there could be one by the cold watar storage tank.

If there is a valve on that pipe somewhere and you have already turned this off, it will need replacing if the water does not stop running. If do not wish to drain it down, you could always bung the feed in the cold water storage tank. Make sure the water has stopped running when you have done this, then exchange the old gate valve for a new one.

Repeat this with the cold supply.

so I take it if the gate valves are knacked I would have to drain the whole system down then.

If [you] do not wish to drain it down, you could always bung the feed in the cold water storage tank. Make sure the water has stopped running when you have done this, then exchange the old gate valve for a new one.
