Issuing Gas Safety Certificate & requirements

"make silly laws such as making it illegal for any competent person to carry out their own gas appliance service, leaves us at the mercy of you guys, gas safe engineers"

Sorry but you are absolutely wrong , if you are competent then you can carry out your own gas appliance servicing, but you are not competent that is the point, just because you think you could do it doesnt mean you are competent, if you hold a relovent recognised qualification then you are competent

You make me laugh! I strongly disagree here, but let us not go into a debate over this, as time and again I have to explain how many number of times I have come across shoddy workmanship from allegedly qualified Gas Safe fitters and engineers including one from Transco itself when he replaced a Gas Meter , he left the test nipple loose! I guess he left it loose so that a competent person like me can pull my screw driver out and tighten the damn thing to stop the gas escape, .......errr wait a minute......Am I qualified and competent to tighten a small screw!!!!! I guess not!! I need to have a diploma or a certificate hung on my wall before I am able to tighten a small screw!

You see someone on a pavement bleeding from a stab wound, you call 999 and wait for an ambulance and by the time it arrives at the scene the person has bled to death, or do you simply use your common sense and stop his bleeding temporarily until help arrives, you could save a potential life, a car crashes trapping its driver and has caught fire, do you go to your van and fetch the extinguisher and start tackling the fire yourself or wait for the fire engine to arrive to put out the fire! every situation is different and demands a different level of deployment whether you are qualified Doctor or a qualified professional Fire Man. But you Gas safe men can't see beyond a boiler's pilot light window!

Mikefromlondon you haven't a clue the scope of knowledge a RGI is required to know , so i suggest you quit while you 'think' you are ahead.

Oh really! quite frankly it isn't a rocket science either, even experts from Nasa got it wrong with their Chellenger!

There are some incompetent RGI's, but that doesn't make those who aren't registered any better. You can get a diligent one to do your CP12s, it just becomes less likely at £20 a pop.

...........AND STOP EDITING YOUR POSTS.

LOL! thought it might upset you so I left the joke out! any ways as for testing the leak after tightening the nipple screw, I left any final testing or satisfaction for Transco experts, who came down within 1/2hr to recheck for any leaks, as the critical fault left by the meter swapp engineer was reported to them, so they advised me to evacuate the occupants of the house as well as occupants in adjacent houses, oh it was full scale alert and and we all nearly fell laughing! Just for a small loose nipple!

My stupid wife who is hearing impaired has so many times left our gas cooker knob on after cleaning and her sense of smell is just as bad, I have come to house smelling full of raw gas!

I have now changed the hob with a new safer type that has the flame detection device to stop her blowing my house, and i have done the same at the rented house, as you cannot trust people leaving the raw gas discharging from a cooker burner.

( BTW, I did not change the hobs myself, but the fact is I was equally capable of doing exactly what the registered guy did, but as I am not qualified or competent as you call it, so it cost me 100 quid to remain on the right side of the law! )

Strange, as the standard advice they give is to turn off at the ECV, no naked lights etc.. until they attend.

Don't worry T - this guy is a regular BS poster on here.

Good for a laugh, but little more.

Just think. One headache all those years ago and we wouldn't have to be bothered by it.

Hey ho.

Yes I think the emergency desk did advice to turn off the ECV, but insisted that we evacuate the building as well, later on the new Transco guy came with his electronic leak sniffing equipment and checked all around the new meter and failed to find any leaks and wrote on his report that NO LEAK FOUND! and left!

In over 13 years of doing this I have never been asked to evacuate a building. Let alone surrounding properties

Even with uncontrolled leaks.

And I can be pretty certain I have attended more gas leaks than you have invented.

You're talking shoite.
