Java updates

1. Keep java updated, it is a bloody horrible program and older versions allow some really nasty viruses to exploit it's code and infect your computer.

2. Few websites require Java, personally I don't have it installed, but a number of free game websites require it.

3. go into "Start / Run & type in "msconfig" (without the quotes).

This will bring up "systems configuration utility" Go to the startup tab.

Disable java (or un-tick the box). This will not stop java working, it will just stop it from loading when you turn your computer on, and instead only load when it is actually needed.

If you haven't done this before, then it is worth looking through all the programs in start-up, and de-select a number of them. Things like I-tunes, adobe reader, various audio or CD software, can all set themselves to load on start-up and run 100% of the time, whether or not you are currently using them.

It depends on your computer and what you have, but you should typically only need about 6-10 items in the startup list actually selected.
