No, he is where he is because he, like the rest of New 'Labour' has abandoned his life-long passion of socialism. That is the only reason why New 'Labour' is in power.

I have never been a socialist per se but I strongly believe in alternative voices and differing opinions, it is extremely important.

New 'Labour' is an institutional lie and I feel sorry for anyone who voted for them, you have been conned and lied to. I also feel sorry for the 'working classes' who now have no-one to represent them. Oh sorry, they have, parties like the BNP are directly appealing to them with thinly veiled (but actually racist) policies. Fantastic!

For the benefit of our foreign readers I feel I should add that part of the reason why John Prescott got where he is is because he is an extremely attractive man. Although he is 67 years old he has had a lifetime of abstinence and healthy living which has given him a youthful appearence, a slim and toned physique and a clear eye. A keen teetotaller and vegetarian, he is often to be seen on the local running track before dawn and he won a bronze medal for both 400m and 1500m in the 1958 olympic games.

Most nights after work he visits the swimming pool for a couple of hundred lenghts of crawl, and as recently as 2004 he swum the English Channel not once but twice, to raise money for poor people.

In 2005 he joined the "Westminster Warriors" cycling relay team and next year he is joining them on a cycle ride from London to Delhi to raise awareness for the endangered Natterjack Toad, which faces extinction.

He is also a patron of the arts and before he became a politician he was principle cellist for the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

This fine man deserves our support.

Well, I say I respect him because he didn't the the privileged origins of other politicians, and has bettered himself with the help of hard work and innate ability. Perhaps he would have done better if he was a smooth talker like the others.

I respect and applaud him for what he has achieved for himself, especially given he didnt have the privileged upbringing many of his other peers had, as you have rightly said. However a distinction should be made between personal achievements and professional capabilities.
At some point we have to measure people according to their merits and value to our society. What tangible value has Prescott ever given the country?

I don't hate politicians, I just believe it is right to scrutinise their abilities to carry out the job, just as many people in different walks of life are.

I would vote for the party he represented if I believed the policies of the party to be right for the country at the time of the election.

Yes indeed! Labour were never going to get in after the debacle in the 70s. They switched 'right' to get in. It is no co-incidence that the Tories have had a push on 'green' policies - they need something different if they are ever going to get in again!

Yes, I probably do. I can respect and applaud him for making something of his life, but still have my reservations about his actions.
