Hello. We have an upstairs room which spans the original house and an extension. The joists in the extension part are approx 10mm lower than the original half of the room. Currently, a slope is formed between the two halves by a floorboard, after which chipboard sheets form a level floor in the extension half.

Ideally, I'd like the whole floor to be at the same level. Is it appropriate to do this by attaching strips of timber to the tops of all the lower joists? If so, what would be the best type of wood to use and how best to attach it? I'd probably get the strips cut by our timber merchant for accuracy.

Thanks very much.

If you are certain that you need 10mm make up material then perhaps go for 10mm plv and ask the supplier to rip it to suit the joist thickness eg 40mm x 10mm rippings.
