Hi,

Just in the process of ripping out an old bathroom and found some notching on one of the joists which made me stop and pause. I can see why it's done as there are no other routes for the shower waste to come across but it does look severe.

The wall with the exposed block is an exterior wall so assuming the joist runs all the way to the edge, it's span is approx. 45-50cm, terminating in a joist hanger on the other end.

Does anybody have a view as to whether the joist is likely to be structurally important and if so, has it been notched too far?

Thanks

UC

It’s not really a joist as it runs the other way.

As far as I can tell its purpose is to support the end of the joist running next to the wall, although if that had been fixed to the wall the trimmer probably wasn’t needed.

It’s been done like that because of the soil pipe stopping the joist running through and being supported on the top of the ground floor partition wall

If the joist which runs half way along the back wall is bolted to that wall then the notched trimmer isn't carrying any additional load so you could put the soil pipe back if the plan is to keep the existing wc position.
