Our joists in the loft are not very strong,they flex when i walk on them, is it possible for me to run secondary joists along side the originals ? If yes what dimensions should the timber be.The span is 3metres.
Hi, Ceiling joists are not meant to be walked on regulaly. However, if you need to walk on them to store things in the loft space you can spread the load by fitting tongue and groove boarding available from B&Q etc. screw down to joists to avoid damage to ceiling plaster. If you still need to strengthen the joists further then a simple rule is divide the span by 2 gives the depth of joist in inches so:-
3m = 10ft
10 divided by 2 = 5
so you need 5" x 2" joists if they were on their own but as you already have existing joists 4"x2" would be o.k. Fit alongside and screw through existing into new then fit T&G boarding as above.
