We have ripped out the ensuite in a house we have owned for a few months and was checking the joists and was confused by this system?

Now worrying these aren’t standard joists and aren’t strong enough.

Can anyone advise if this looks ok?

It is like timber on the bottom and top and in the middle is like thinner stuff

Correct. They work in composite and in a certain direction. Torsion - not so clever, but that should never be an issue.

Several types available reproducing the style of a steel beam where the top and bottom bits do most of the work.

Lighter than solid timber, should be straighter and available in deeper and longer sizes. The downside is that they need proper detailing and support at joints and need careful handling.
