so with the necessity of continued working from, and with other areas of the house to uncomfortable, i need to look into creating our 2nd spare room into an office, at first i was just going to slap a desk in, but the wife now wants me to remove the currently fitted wardrobe but wishes not to lose most of the storage, despite me not wishing to carry out her demands, i have failed and so i am doing what she has asked/told me to do.

i want to do something similar to the below with the wall units and shelf above, and then for the desk i want to use 2x kitchen bases and a piece of worktop to make the top of the desk,

in effect it will be a built in desk.

problem is a priced up with diykitchens and it was best part of £1500 in their LUCA range, it was only for 5 units and a piece of work top, with the fillet's required :(, it was a bit of a shock tbh.

anyone got ideas on a cheaper alternative, the length of the wall it is being situated on is 2200mm

Is it the units or the worktop that's more expensive than you'd hoped?
The obvious answer to "what's cheaper than new units?" would be "used units". I see 1000 listings for kitchen units on eBay at the moment. You're obviously not going to have anywhere near as much choice and they're probably mostly collection only.
Have you considered divorce?
In a similar vein, the Mrs demanded I build a desk for the son from my extensive collection of splintery, naily scrap wood, so he can do school work at home. Her contribution was screwing the rubber feet on, and somehow that meant that "we" had built it. There's no justice in this world.

lol yeah.

i'm just wondering if their is cheaper places for kitchens than diykitchens.co.uk

i was more shocked at the cost of 5 units, considering i can get a bed, wardrobe and chest of draws for less.

you can buy cheak kd units very cheap

if you like that sort of thing.

they can be stiffened up a bit with extra glue, screws and corner pyramids. When fixed to a wall they will be quite rigid, a nd you have no cooking appliances to make vinyl-wrap peel off.

But if it's for working from home, will it be tax-deductible expense?

thanks.

i wouldnt know how to claim the tax back, but then if i'm technically doing it for work, could i ask work to apply for an account with howdens or something

maybe

it's easier if you're self-employed or have your own company, though.

wickes have a 50% off sale aswell, but you have to go through their design service for the units i want, tried speaking to customer service asking that it wasnt for a kitchen but an office and would they still "design" what i want, couldnt answer said id have to book an appointment and speak to the designer. so waiting for a call back.

just want handle less gloss cupboards

Wickes sale is in name only as they dont have a price list you can compare with, they make up a price and then give you 50% off the highly inflated price.

I think the height of kitchen units will too high as a desk top. I have units either side of a desk in my man cave/garage with work top on top. Cost approx £200 and suits me in the warmer weather.

If I reduce the height of the legs it would be a nice height

That may work, be worth raising them off the floor a little probably just using the plastic socket that the legs normally slot into. Find the height that is comfortable for you using PC etc and go from there.

Basic units from one of the sheds will be cheapest its the doors that add the cost.

Shed legs can be reduced to as little as 2” and still have a little adjustment which would make the top of the unit 770mm high

The cheapest B&Q range are perfectly serviceable. Try their flat panel matt grey doors - look quite smart and about £20 each. KD cabinets are OK.
