I think I saw them advertised on TV, they have holes in the hob, drawing the steam from the pots down through the hob itself. What happens to the steam then, is anyone's guess.

Incredibly pointless, unless it extracts to the outside.

No, this one is different, the hob is on the island and the extractor sits behind this. When it needs to be used (ie you are using the hob) it rises out of the island
