A lack of expansion gap might lead to the floor bowing upwards, it would not result in the edges expanding.

On the balance of probability, it really does look like the result of water in the gaps.

Based on the photo, it is directly near the table. Do you (the OP) have children in the house?

For what it is worth, I have worked in numerous properties where the cleaner uses way more water than they should- btw, I am not blaming your cleaner (if you,the OP, have one).
 
Thanks. No cleaner (I wish) and kids growing up predated the floor installation. There can only have been the odd slippage of liquid on that area (probably tea) but obviously enough.
