Clarkson got a fair wedge for his farm show. But that was brilliant.

I agree with the above to some degree. The beeb are the star makers so the contracts should be a bit more simon Cowell.

If you don't like the daft amounts they dish out to the pampered muppets then instead of getting angry you can just unsubscribe and stop paying them.

We cancelled our telly licence 2 years ago, got a £80 immediate refund (as you're always 6 months in-hand), and have paid nothing since, saving about £400 so far and more every month. We have 3 tellies and watch loads on them. Many people mistakenly think you need a licence for any TV but that is not the case any more.

Without a licence you CAN...

Watch ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, All other commercial TV channels on-demand via their apps (e.g. on a smart TV or dongle)
YouTube
Netflix
Disney+
Any other subscription service
Listen to all BBC radio stations
Read the BBC website (if you really want to)

You can NOT watch...

BBC iplayer
Any live TV, from the BBC or any other broadcaster

The last bit is the unfair bit, but sadly it's how it is.

I've found it really healthy to stop leaving the idiot-box on scrolling news as I used to and just watch on-demand stuff that I actually want to watch. I keep up with news via the net and radio, I don't miss hearing the same story 10 times in a loop.

I have always wondered what is the point of Ant and Dec.
They don't sing or dance, they don't tell jokes or do tricks.
What exactly are they paid for.
 
I don't get it with the news readers? three or four hundred thousand quid for reading out loud.

One of the most common methods of fraud is to award a contract for an inflated price, then sit back & wait for the brown envelope.

Yeah, the smart ones have their own production companies and get paid through those. Danny Baker and Chris Evans made a bomb load from Century 21st. Most of their content was on Channel 4- which too is government owned.

If Noton and McIntiye are paid through a production company we will never know how much they earnt.

But you still can't watch, for example, the England game even though there is a 15ish second delay via the ITV app.

I can see why people dislike paying for the TV licence but I often think they (not necessarily you) overlook the potential near future consequences of doing away with the TV licence.

The BBC has a market share of 32.18%. That is roughly 50% higher than the next most watched channel (ITV).

If the BBC had to start advertising tomorrow, bucket loads of smaller channels would go bust because the BBC would suck up so much of the advertising revenue. There is a very good reason why the likes of ITV do not push for the licence to be pulled.

Advertisers pay to advertise on quality programmes if bbc has not got access to the money it has now what standard of programme will they produce and will advertisers want to invest in bad programmes

It’s not freeloading given that …

Total BBC income in 2021/22 was £5.33 billion, 71% of which came from the licence fee revenues. The remaining 29% or £1.53 billion came from commercial and other activities (such as grants, royalties and rental income).

Hard to believe that anyone still pays the BBC tbh . When the majority wake up and cancel they'll have to earn their corn like the rest of the world.

You have the attitude of the BBC being some kind of worthy cause. If it wants people to care about it then it needs to start acting responsibly. I find it disgusting that working class households are being threatened with imprisonment to pay money they can't afford so these pampered luvvies can earn more in a year than many people will ever get in their lifetimes.

Give up with the stupid salaries, just sack them all tomorrow. Almost anyone can read an autocue to camera, most are utterly talentless. There is no free market that demands the sort of money they earn, the supposed market is propped up by the silly money the BBC pays. If the BBC dropped all its salaries then the commercial salaries would collapse too - the BBC basically IS the market for talentless autocue readers.

That John bloke who runs TVLIcenceStop has loads of YouTube videos. He, among other sensible voices, is suggesting a minimal taxpayer-funded BBC TV service (perhaps just a slimmed down BBC One and News) that can be viewed on a standard existing freeview box that everyone's granny has. But the rest goes commercial, via an online service for viewing via a smart TV or dongle that most people already own. This could be for free viewing with adverts, with the option of paying the equivalent of the current licence fee for no adverts. It all sounds pretty sensible to me.

ITV are already competing against loads of other commercial broadcasters, and every billboard, magazine, newspaper and google's online advertising including YouTube. TV is not the separate world it once was, the world has moved on and the BBC are stuck in the old days.

I'm happy to be among the 2 million other households who are taking a stand against the ridiculous outdated BBC. It's all completely legal, entirely moral and the bonus is it's a protest that actually saves you money from day one. Don't be fooled by the government spin, where they refer to an "evasion rate" of households who don't pay, implying there's something dodgy going on. It's not, it's not a tax, it's not compulsory and there's nothing wrong with not handing your money over to the evil mob.
