Don't get me wrong - I would much rather the railways were nationalised and run properly by the state, for the people, but my point is that the railways appear to be much better these days, and at a healthy surplus, and part of that must be thanks to the escape from old 'nationalised industry' mentality.
I would prefer them to be run as they are currently, but with the surplus going into a combination of investment in the railway and, crucially, making journey costs cheaper. At the moment I feel it is impossible for anyone other than a lone-traveller to opt for railways over car - I could never consider taking my family to that London on a train.
