Is there a chemist in the house ?

Is it OK to use galvanised steel mesh embedded in lime plaster ?

Or do we *have* to use stainless steel mesh ?

This is for the soffit board, which was sawn lath & lime plaster, but it disintegrated - we reckon due to traffic vibration. Grade II Listed, and they will accept steel mesh & lime plaster, though we doubt the plaster will stay up long enough to get hard enough to stay up - if you get my drift !

Well, we instructed stainless steel ribmesh and stainless steel fixings, and lime plaster.

When I went to look, the stainless mesh was cut to size and up, but it was ordinary mesh, not ribmesh, and plain galvanised big-head nails + some black screws.

The lime plaster has gone up, and been lime-washed.

So far, so good. And if the lime rots the fixings, well, it should see us out first !

Thank you for your help.

It should have been treated with an alkaline resistant chemical or it will rot very quickly. I would have gone for wood lath...
