lining for a planter

Personally I’ve made a couple of planters and put a “weed control” type of water-permeable material over the bottom and sides.
But I’d say that it’s not necessary unless you have significant gaps that the soil could wash out through.
Definitely don’t use impermeable plastic (unless maybe you make lots of holes in it); it needs to drain.

Thanks. Has your wood not rotted away?

Those ones with the lining are about 18 months old and look pretty solid still. They were made with scrap palette wood, painted with cuprinol garden shades.

I have some other older (10 years?) planters made from decking boards, unpainted and unlined; they are still solid until you try to move them at which point they start to fall apart at thr joints.
