Little more info please. what size joists? are you replacing the old? is it roof/ground floor/first floor/new roof? what are your bearing walls made from? etc etc
Old joists left in place 4x2. New 8x2 joists needed for max 4.5m span. New bedroom in a bungalow loft with single roof window.
Walls are brick. present joists sit on a wooden wall plate of similar dia.
Thanks
Then run the new joists parrallel and fix them down the the wall plate. Run a line of noggins close to the wallplate perimeter and at mid span to stiffen it all up.
8x2 wont do 4.5m span thou, not normal C16 grade timber and at standard centres. You may need to look into uping them to 10x2s.
Yes you could put in a few M10 bolts with oversized washers. I still say the span is too great for the size of joist you are using, and building regs will probably pick up on it.
