Loft insulation

Another couple of months and they'll be on clearance. Hardly anyone buys insulation when they're not cold.

I only use the mineral wool treated with Ecose, which doesn't shed irritant dust and fibres. I've had problems with the old yellow fibreglass.

The Ecose product is brown and soft. It's made by Knauf but is also packaged as an own-brand, but you will see the "Ecose" flash on the packaging.
Is this Knauf "earthwool"? Getting confused as thought Knauf earthwool was rockwool, so would be better than the yellow glasswool if there was any damp in loft. Now I see it says it's mineral and glass wool. It's about £23 a roll (200 mm and covers c 6m2) but if I buy enough to put 300mm (if the 100mm that's up there is knackered) or 400mm if it's not, it's £19 a roll which is the same as Wicks Knauf glasswool 200mm. I guess I just want to know which is the better insulation and gt it ordered as some builders merchants are going out of stock fast. If we go for "earthwool" any excess I can just sell. Is it OK to put 400mm down?

the length of a roll varies with its thickness. Thick rolls tend to be shorter. The price you pay tends to reflect the volume of fibre, not its length.

I would only buy the Ecose version, even if they were giving away yellow glass for nothing.

It's all about the same R value, so don't worry. Rockwool is a brand name, Knauf Earthwool is also another brand name. The Knauf one from B&Q is nicer to work with that the yellow stuff, far less itchy.

Going above 300mm doesn't make much difference, and the payback time of the extra material will be very long.

Remember, 2 identically sized packs - 1 of 100mm and 1 of 200mm, the 100mm will be twice as long so you will need half the number of packs.
