Thanks guys for all your interesting comments, certainly giving me loads to think about...

An open fire burning solid fires is far too messy, hence the idea of a log burning stove.. didn’t realise it had to be surveyed by a hetas installer?

A point brought up on the chimney liners is one never really publicised, I didn’t even know they had a life span of 5 -10 years? At least it helps in the calculating the overall running cost!

Just for the record I have GCH but would be nice on cold Saturday nights in front of the TV to have the extra heat without warming the entire house.

You don't have to, it's controllable. Besides free standing log burners have the disadvantage of pumping huge amounts of energy into 1 room, rendering it unbearable, while the rest of the house freezes.

Oh, and sadly, the liner / chimney remediation can cost significantly more than the stove itself.

I have to say my parents had three small woodburners and the heat definitely permeated the rest of the house, especially upstairs, even with just one lit.
