There are several data centres already in many countries. Slough is just one more

London Data Centres

Strategically located in Docklands, Reading and Slough, we’re the partner of choice to financial services, media, software, and telecommunications leaders.

Amsterdam
Data Centre

The Amsterdam data centre facility is home to three of the world's largest Internet exchanges and is close to several key undersea cable landing stations. This market has become a major centre for financial services technology and home to global leaders in energy, insurance and consumer products.

Frankfurt Data Centres

Our Frankfurt data centres are 10km apart from each other, which make them an appealing offering to companies searching for disaster recovery and backup solutions. Additionally, our data centres support some of the world’s leading enterprises and finance institutions with scalable colocation and provide access to hundreds of cloud and managed service providers.

They're all claiming to be the best, the fastest, the most reliable, etc.

You only have to look at the big Cloud providers and where they prioritised their data centres.
Slough seems to be the centre of Europe with all the big players expanding and prioritising deployments.

Aye, Slough Trading Estate has certainly changed since I were a lad. The smell of Mars Bars is less prevalent. I'm guessing part of the attraction for the server companies is Slough Estates generates it's own power. The server companies are big although not big employers of people. Wernham Hogg probably had more staff.
