It used to be generally reckoned that the chuck capacity (e.g. 1/4in, 5/16in, 3/8in, etc) size was the maximum size you could drill, but when bigger motors and chucks became the norm in the late 1960s/early 1970s firms like Mason Master and Rawl started to offer reduced shank masonry bits, so it all got a bit confused. I'd still take chuck capacity as being the limit, however, at least for "standard" (DIY/liught trade) electric drills (so I'm assuming we are not talking about those low rpm, high torque industrial drills from the days of yore).I don't know where the cutoff is, but those are two common sizes I do.
