loosening rusty screws!

It's screwed to the top using slotted screws but they are quite rusty. I've tried my cordless driver but I think the corrosion is holding them too tight.

I have an impact driver, but I'm concerned this could snap the screws below the surface.

Heat will help - Get an old well fitting screwdriver end, red hot and hold it in the screw until you smell burning wood. Then try will a well fitting ordinary screwdriver.

A few whacks with a hammer on an old fashioned hand impact screwdriver?
I do something similar. I have a small selection of through tang mechanics screwdrivers which were bought cheaply in the 1970s. Insert screwdriver into slot (if needs be regrind the tip to get a really snug fit in the slot), hold screwdriver and turn whilst whacking the top of the screwdriver with a hammer. Works like an manual impact wrench. Can be done with any cheap plastic handles screwdriver but will potentially "muller" the screwdriver handle.

All I'd say is that pretty much all modern slotted head bits are too small for larger wood screws, especially size #12 and above screws, and in addition they are all but impossible to regrind to get a good fit. If the screw driver (or bit) isn't a snug fit in the screw head slot and_or is shorter than the slot in the screw head, you just end up "mullering" the screw head
