Loss of sound

Help AGAIN please.
I have lost all sound on my PC.
All cables plugged in okay. Switched on this afternoon and cannot hear a thing.
Can the sound just go like that? Is there a sound card which can fail?
or can the speakers just stop?

Check with a pair of known good headphones first.

Do the following ( windows XP )
Start
control panel
Sounds and audio devices
Make sure your device is listed at the top of the box just below the tabs
Make sure the volume is turned up
click on the sounds tab
click on any one of the items in the list that has a loudspeaker symbol next to it
At the bottom there will ( should ) be a small square box with a play symbol in it
click and a sound should play

If any of the above things dont happen or are not there repost
