Mains Bonding

I have seen quite two different set up for mains bonding of gas and water pipes

1)all earth cables lead back to the consumer unit
2) all cables lead back to a dedicated earth block

What's the benefits if any of having a separate earth block over using a consumer unit? What is preferred?

No difference. You can either have an external Main Earthing Terminal or use the earth bar in your consumer unit as the Main Earthing Terminal
