It's been suggested that I need a mains prover to verify the mains test calibration of my 1651 Fluke.

Do I need one and if so, what should I get and where from?

Also I understand that I'm meant to keep a calibration record (and test every 3 months) that the tester is reading correctly.

Is this the only alternative ?

Quote from the NICEIC

What the NICEIC say about instrument accuracy:

It is essential to ensure the accuracy and consistency of test instruments used to carry out the range of tests and measurements required for BS7671 for certification and reporting purposes. There should be a system in place which enables confirmation of the continuing accuracy and consistency of all test instruments used for certification and reporting purposes.

As always, thanks for any help.

The NICEIC do like you to have a method of proving the accuracy of your instruments.

I have just recently passes my Part P assesment with the NIC and I have a home made version of the cal check box - I used an IP box with banana sockets and various resistors which allow me to test

RESISTANCE @ 0.5 ohms, 1 ohm, 10 ohms and 100 ohms
INSULATION @ 0.5Mohms, 1 Mohm, 10 M ohms and 100 Mohms

I also have a nominated socket (not RCD protected) to test Zs and a plug in RCD

Carry out these proving tests monthly - the readings do not need to be accurate, they just have to be consistant from one month to the next.

As for a mains prover, you only need one to prove safe isolation; however you could just use the incomming side of the isolator!

The above box cost me about £17 (I could have sourced the items cheaper !); in the end I got some hard to get resistors from a local TV repair man:)
