Tailgate struts have dual function.....try lifting your tailgate up without them.

I did when both snapped, no problem at all opening just difficult to stop it slamming shut.They are there to dampen the action of the springs, boot use to fly open when one damper snapped.

Tailgate springs?
Hatchbacks have ordinary hinges and its the gas strut that does the lifting for you. They are so set that on full extension they are just strong enough to hold the weight of the tailgate.
Every vehicle could be different, depending on the tailgate weight.
Older booted saloons can have longitudinal springs though.
