Making Circles

I think it might be and I haven't as of yet no I can give it a go though. Do you think it will make any difference?

These are only test pieces from the local timber yard scrap bin it will be done on a piece of pine eventually.

Thanks

You could easily ( well I could) just make large circles right through the material using a bearing guided profile cutter. Any cnc shop will make you bespoke templates specific to your requirements.
Then glue another piece on that's machined and finished perfectly.

So if I understand correctly you have a template piece the size you need it in this case 40mm and you follow that round with the stock underneath making your hole? I presume for any areas in the middle you could just move the cutter where ever needed to remove the stock?

So you would need a specific sized cutter with the template so it makes the entire hole in the circumference pass?

NO.
Have you ever used a bearing guided profiler with a hand held router?

Bearing guided profilers are probably the greatest asset to a hand held router ever made.
Just set your guide template and off you go. No faffing around with silly guide bushes.
We use trends 10mm cutter and burn them out by the dozen.
I have the rota tip set for my own personal use when making bespoke products and pieces. Which is a cut above the rest.

No I haven't.

So I literally have a template of the size I want and just follow it round the template? The thing I am struggling with is you said about only doing the circumference but how does the middle part get done?

This is why I thought you needed a specific sized cutter....

I also presume that I would need a profiler with the bearing at the top opposed to the bottom to make the recess holes?

I also presume they can be plunged?

Sorry I don't understand what you mean by the laminated face to face glue up to clear the middle?

I was thinking it would need to be a 19mm cutter to do the circumference giving a 38mm hole which would be the closest thing from what I have seen on the net so far..

Except for the fact that if you end up tilting them accidentally in the cut they will damage both the material AND the template? Which is a good reason to use guide bushes on longer runs - the template lasts longer. And BTW I DO use template (top bearing) cutters as well

@Roger928 sorry I am trying to understand and learn what you mean. I have tried googling it to find out and the only thing I can find is gluing two boards together for strength which I can't see how that would bring out the center bit.

Would I be better with the mortising bit as @JobAndKnock suggested? And would the planed timber give me the desired effect opposed to rough sawn?

Thanks

James
