Mrs Secure has a Dell Optiplex GX50, with 512MB memory.

According to Dell, it cannot be extended. Is that right, or is it possible to increase memory further?

Far as I know that's correct. You should perhaps upgrade to something not three generations old. ;)

Seconded, 512mb is the max according to the memory upgrade advisor on the Crucial website.

If you're running XP then 512mb should be fine anyway, unless you're doing video encoding, etc in which case I'd be wondering why you were doing it on such an old machine ;)

If the board is that old I'm not sure you'd get much of a performance improvement from the memory upgrade as the processor would also be on the slow side. What is it, an old Celeron?

Yeah.

I know it's ancient. Just trying to think of a stop-gap way to improve running speeds before we buy a new system.

Thanks guys.

Format C:

It'll run a lot quicker then

Seriously, when was the last time you wiped the hard drive and re-installed Windows from scratch? I could suggest getting a new hard drive and installing on that as they're quicker now than they would have been when the GX50 was sold, but you'd be unlikely to see the full extent of any potential performance increase because the motherboard is too old to take advantage.

So, other than replacing large chunks of the hardware (i.e. motherboard, processor, hard drive, memory) which would be like having a new pc anyway, a clean install of Windows is probably the best you're going to get IMO.
