Did they have December 25 then? When was the Gregorian calander that we use today introduced again? He certainly seems to have foresight that Pope.
December was a month in the Julian calendar too.
December means tenth month in olde world speak apparently, hence the word
decimal, ie power of 10, but I got this off Wikipedia,

Among the many traditions associated with Christmas are the construction of cribs and the performance of re-enactments of elements of the story in the Gospels of the birth of Jesus.
There has been debate about the reason why Christians came to choose the 25 December date to celebrate the birth of Jesus. One theory is that they did so in order to oppose the existing winter-solstice feast of the Natalis Solis Invicti (Birthday of the Unconquered Sun) by celebrating on that date the birth of the "Sun of Righteousness".[54] Another tradition derived the date of Christmas from that of the Annunciation, the virginal conception of Jesus.[54] Since this was supposed to have taken place on 14 Nisan in the Jewish calendar, calculated to have been either 25 March or 6 April, it was believed that the date of Christ's birth will have been nine months later.[55] A tractate falsely attributed to John Chrysostom argued that Jesus was conceived and crucified on the same day of the year and calculated this as 25 March, a computation also mentioned by Saint Augustine of Hippo.[54]
So they just chose a date that was convenient, and with the various revisions since, could be celebrated in the middle of summer for all we know, or Jesus didn't exist, and the bible is a Harry Potter book of the time. You could see someone in 2000 years finding a Harry Potter book - 'Ohh! look at this wizard, what miracles he performs!'..
Then you have all the other religions that don't recognise Jesus, or the bible, but have their own Gods, and leaders. Not into all that. Just spend all day arguing with family, cooking a Sunday lunch ALL day, that eventually inevitably ends with bitterness, sorrow, regret, and indigestion. And now the interweb exists, argue with people you are never likely to meet, over the nuances of wether 25 December is a real date in history. (no offense!)
Not arguing, just saying what a pointless waste of time it all is, good for kids, bad to lie to them about an imaginary person breaking into your house, leaving presents behind. Merry Xmas!
