Soldering can be done, it's "quite tricky" but it can be done. Not that much different to soldering large lugs onto cables - as I've done in the past for car battery cables (another of those showing the supposedly professionals how to do it). Having said that, a large bit of 3mm plate would be extra tricky.
The trick is to pre-tin the cable core and wrap a damp cloth tightly round the insulation. Then get the big lump of metal up to temperature, tinned, and in the case of a lug - partially filled with solder. Then while keeping the heat on the BLOM, bring the cable to it and add more solder if needed (needs a third hand) - then remove the heat and cool the BLOM down starting away from the joint. Cooling is tricky, you don't want to dump a load of cold water on the joint and shock cool the solder into a fragile joint, but you need to take enough heat out quickly to set the solder and then rapidly cool it below the temperature where the insulation is further damaged.
