Minimiser SE again.....

you are unlikely to get heatexchangers on a BG FPR. it will likely be quoted.

also, it's supposed to be one price for one repair. the engineer will find it hard to justify a pcb, gas valve and whatever else on one price.

Quite often possible to break the big chunks of aluminium oxide off the heat exchanger to enable enough access to clean the fins so that the appliance can draw enough air to burn properly....pretty much guarantee that's all your bg guy will be doing.

love that job

I rang BG and they wanted £399 fixed cost call out but get this no one available until March 14th !!!
I contacted a company "ReactFast" ? offering a similar deal for £171 but heat exchanger & PCB not included. I know this may be good money after bad boiler but it may work out a faster cheaper fix and I can then sort the system when I haven't got an icicle dangling from my John Thomas !!

I used to use a toilet brush to clean those heat exchangers......must say something about the design

Thats the puppy, cut the handle down and jobs a good un until the brush pushes all the crud deep into the fins and blocks it. ;)

I had the fixed fee heating engineer out today and with a number of problems plus potential problems it looks like the best move is a new boiler.
I have had a quote from a guy who insisted I would need to upgrade to 22mm gas feed - with all the aggro and expense that would entail, however on investigating a little more I now know this isn't true. There are boilers which can happily run on a 15mm gas feed Valliant and Ariston both have versions of these. After a recommendation by Ray84 (thanks Ray !) and some further research I am favouring the Ariston Clas 30 HE. I am seeing an Npower rep on Wednesday since they supply gas & electric to me but I am doubtful of the prospect of a sensible quote. Has anyone installed the Ariston Clas boiler ? Is the external sensor worth fitting ? Are magnetic filters worth fitting ? :?:

anyone who favours an ariston boiler is either a liar or being lied to.

the gas supply pipe size is decided by the power of the boiler not the brand. A pipe size calculation needs to be carried out to determine the pipe size. Not sure about Ariston. Every ariston I've ever seen has been an absolute dog.

Well Npower have quoted me £2,700 for a swap out with a Vaillant EcoTec Plus 428 and that includes a 20mm feed pipe increase. I accept that maybe the latest range of Combi boilers need a higher gas pressure but they could at least test what I already have before contemplating extensive and expensive pipe work changes. I have a local guy coming round this afternoon so we'll see what he offers.
