Quite often possible to break the big chunks of aluminium oxide off the heat exchanger to enable enough access to clean the fins so that the appliance can draw enough air to burn properly....pretty much guarantee that's all your bg guy will be doing.

Thats the puppy, cut the handle down and jobs a good un until the brush pushes all the crud deep into the fins and blocks it.
