hi all, called into my local esso garage this morning to top up my moped
put £ 3 petrol in.. went to pay with my switch card he said " sorry sir there is a minimum of £5 on a card " i replied " there isnt any notices anywhere saying that, anyway im skint i aint got any cash "he called manager who wanted me to top it up to £5 by buying sweets etc.. anyway i refused and they took my card saying that it costs them money to do it

is that true :?: ive been to tescos and others before and bought items less than £ 3

Its true - Most larger places swallow the cost though.

Only places I know that routinely charge a surcharge for cards is online airlines......

Debet card transaction costs the retailer £ 0.61, that doesn't leave the garage with much profit on a £ 3.00 sale. I agree with you it should be pointed out to you before you get petrol.
Tesco etc get hundreds debet card transactions a day (and will have a better rate with the card transaction company than small retailers) from say £1.50 to £150, so all in all on average 'hardly' any influence on the profit.

I blame the Sheriff of Notingam, that`s where the money goes. aka Will

When I have worked in shops in the past, there was a minimum £5 card charge. But that was years ago, I assumed that the transaction cost would be next to nothing now (one shop keeper reckoned that Streamline charged him about £2.50 a pop)

They're trying to get us onto "smart" money, aren't they? You can't get rid of notes and coins then have a minimum of £5 for any transaction

No, the charges for debet card transaction have gone up from around 40p to 61 p per transaction. You could call that a sharp raise, but on the other hand: retailer doesn't have to have lots of coins etc for change or has to pay through the nose to deposit his coins etc. (Standard tariff 55p per £100 for deposit, 62p per £100 for taken out coins). Depositing a cheque at your bank will also costs a retailer around 59p to £1.50 depending on the total number of cheques depositing at one go.

That shopkeeper is wrong IMHO

There is of course another advantage for a shopkeeper: on the spot decision by customers made easier by having the possibility to pay by card instead of having to go home first for the chequebook or having to go to an ATM for cash.[/quote]

i live in doncaster, not been to RHA yet is it nice? I have worked in a few chain canvenience stores. some have minimum £5 for a card, but some will let you buy a 42p chocky bar with it. Most who buy 42p things get cashback though, but there is still no profit in cashback.

Yep - Not bad at all. I was just dropping my Mum off this morning, but will definitely use it when I go on business trips to Paris in the future. As with most regional stuff though, its important that people use it, or the flights will just go away.

Had a hell of a job getting back to the A1 Northbopund afterwards though. I was following signs rather than a map, and I seemed to go all over Donny before I got out.

ah the trick is not to follow the signs! i notice plenty of signs to the airport, but none away from the airport lol. Sounds like you ended up going past the racecourse, then up thru belle vue and out balby way a630. They need to get a link road sorted out (from motorway to airport). Ironically i live in doncaster, yet took my grandma and grandad to manchester airport yesterday morning . . .

I thought RHA was just East Midlands re-branded. Is it the new one near Donny?
