Water leaking into porch at one end - got up to take a look, expecting to find damage to stepped flashing. Instead found flashing along the long front edge of the porch but none down the hip ends, although there seems to be some lead in there under the tiles.

Not sure if something's been removed and not replaced when the house was re-rendered.

Looking at other porches in the street (all individual houses, not an estate) I was surprised to see that a minority were done this way with just the front edge flashed and a gap under the render at the hips.

Is there a way to stop the leak without hacking off the render and installing stepped flashing? There's only a few cm of vertical height between the tiles and the bottom edge of the render.

Yes, take all the tiles off and with a multi tool cut a channel behind the render for some more soakers.

OP,
Look up pics of lead soakers - & then see if you have individual lead soakers below each abutment, plain tile?
If not then you will have to set soakers with each plain tile.
Typically, render uses Bell Casts at the base but you seem to have stop beads?

1. You could run an angle grinder up just below the stop bead to cut a slot - & then wedge a lead cover flashing into the slot. The cover flashing will to cover the soaker upstands.
2. Dont do anything except mix some 4:1 sand and cement - and use it to form a fillet at the abutment.
