Does anyone agree that it should be against the law for anyone under the age of 18 to ride one of these. I constantly seem to find 2 or 3 kids riding side by side screaming along at 28.2 mph with no regard for theirs or others safety. AM i the only one losing my rag :evil: :mad: :mad:

imo age makes no difference, as soon as that little box is fitted on the back the driver doesn't care

I WILL deliver this pizza within 30 mins

I seen one lad the other day screaming along at 15.4 mph kitted out in all the black leathers, racing boots etc.had to laugh :LOL: :LOL:

fat chance of that mate..............if i was i would have booked me for doing 34.6mph in a 30 zone :LOL: :LOL: :LOL:

dont think you could have;

i think you have to allow 10% +2mph so he would have been 0.4mph too slow

We have loads of mopeds round here, seems to be a rite of passage where they turn 16, they buy a moped. We have an extensive cycle-track system round here (not just alongside roads, all over the town) and they ride them on that. It is unnerving at first as a pedestrian, but it means you never get stuck behind them on the road. Well, you do but less often. I have seen people riding 100/125cc scooters on the tracks at 40-50mph which is very naughty and incredibly dangerous.

Having a moped at 16 must be great. Problem is, boys will be boys and they do silly things on their mopeds. Some of them try to do motorcross-esque hill climbs with them, others do wheelies and stoppies with them... Yes, you can pop a wheelie with 50ccs!. They occasionally all sit around with them, the younger boys envy the mopeds. I have even heard some of them refer to their mopeds as a "motorbike"... I make no attempts to contain my laughter when I hear that one. :LOL:

Now, a moped generally has about 2kW power. Maximum power. Argos currently have several 2kW hairdryers for sale. Even a 2.2kW one. So, the power of that moped, ripping up the tarmac at 28mph (providing it isn't up a hill) is less than the rider's mum's hairdryer.

Something I have noticed the local moped-riders doing... Mopeds are "turn and burn", that is you pull the throttle open and it's CVT automatic transmission does the rest. No gearchanges. Yet I hear them pulling away whacking the throttle on and off in bursts, "NEEEEURGH... NEEEEURGH.... NEEEEEURGHH..." Does this somehow defeat the speed governor and allow them to go 29mph, or is this the "it's not a moped it's a motorbike" brigade pretending their "motorbike" has gears? :LOL:

do they still have to have pedals instead of footrests?

anyone under the age of 18

Oh come on! You must have been young once. When I were a lad you could ride machines up to 250cc on a provisional licence. Things started to come to a head when, I think it was Suzuki, brought out the RD250 (no, that was the Yamaha, anyway one of them) that did a ton.

As the death rate started to rise, so the clamour for greater restriction. Eventually that got applied, literally, to the actual machines and here we are with mopeds that can only do 29.9mph. You can either suffer the incessant noise of the scooters or have bikes flash past you in 0.5 secs. Either way they're going to be young and showing off.

If they live till 21 they'll probably get a Fiesta and two kids. Things get quieter then. :D

I remember a mate buying a new Norman Nippy Moplod in 60's .. we went all over the place on it .. dual seat, gears, 3 I think.
It actually went very well, close to 40 mph flat out favourable conditions (no, not down 1:4 !!) .. real exciting at that age, freedom to roam !!
============ Ok it is a NoPlod but at 16 .. she'd be a looker !! :-

Apparently .. 45mph restricted ... 66mph+ derestricted.
Nice to see the design copying the biggies !!

:D :D :D :D :D :D £2599 Judas Priest !! :mad: :mad:

Guess you may hang on and save a little more for a Fo-Ka .. but then again .....

Ah, the Aprilia RS50. I got stuck behind one in Kensington: a rider +pillion, even an RS50 doesn't have enough grunt for that!

The RS125 was an impressive machine though, same design but a bit bigger, with a 125cc engine. There was a tuned example in my local Aprilia dealers with 37bhp and a claimed top speed of 115mph (although Aprilia speedos are notoriously generous). But 37bhp on 125ccs, that is a specific power output of just under 300bhp per litre from a naturally aspirated, carburetted engine. Chew on that, BMW and Honda! :LOL: Thing is, it costs more than many 500 and even 600cc bikes that go a lot quicker and probably cost less to insure.

Mopeds don't have to have pedals anymore, I guess because the modern ones probably have just about enough grunt to get up hills unassisted.

The provisional licence is another thing that has changed: you have to pass a CBT before your provisional licence is valid on the road now, just an afternoon's tuition that teaches you how to get it on and off the stand, brake, manoeuvre and an assesment of your ability on the road. I did mine on a geared 125cc bike, but they tought me how to ride scooters too (different technique for manoeuvring). When my dad got his bike in the 60s his only tuition was the bloke he bought it off running alongside and telling him how to change gear! :LOL:
