Mopeds

Don't you need the full monty i.e Road Tax, Insurance, MOT etc for anything that is capable of 14 Mph plus, including Gopeds ? Err perhaps I should have said anything mechanical, I'd hate to be arrested sprinting down the road, but then again if I WAS sprinting down the road I'd probably be running away from the law anyway, just think of the potential offenses being clocked up. Burglary, sprinting away from the scene with no licence, tax, insurance or MOT, ok sonny we'll drop the burglary charge but your gonna go to jail for 10 years for the sprinting offences :LOL:

Hmmm, dunno, what about prosthetic limbs, all those brave sprinters (who I admire enormously IHTA) at the paralymics, should be thrown into the clink immediately, flagrant breaches of the law !!

What about the moped riders on the cycle lanes? Surely a dedicated cycle lane (i.e. not just the side of the road) doesn't count as a public highway, in which case is it legal to ride a moped on one with no helmet, tax or insurance? I doubt it, I saw some policemen talking to a kid who had been riding up and down without a helmet. I suppose it probably counts as a public highway but restricted to cycles and mopeds.

I'll just sit here in the corner... :LOL:

Oh come on! You must have been young once. When I were a lad you could ride machines up to 250cc on a provisional licence. Things started to come to a head when, I think it was Suzuki, brought out the RD250 (no, that was the Yamaha, anyway one of them) that did a ton.

As the death rate started to rise, so the clamour for greater restriction. Eventually that got applied, literally, to the actual machines and here we are with mopeds that can only do 29.9mph. You can either suffer the incessant noise of the scooters or have bikes flash past you in 0.5 secs. Either way they're going to be young and showing off.

If they live till 21 they'll probably get a Fiesta and two kids. Things get quieter then. :D

I Was young mate and it was great showing off to the girls on our DT125's!! BUT the roads were quieter and less dangerous and just because you have a moped at 16 on your provisional it does not mean you have to live up to the kno* category that must get put on there :LOL:

I had one of the very first of these in the country, in metallic red, but with the box set of the one shown here in champagne, with a low windscreen (didn't like the look of the big one):

It looks a bit odd in the pictures, but they are gorgeous in real life. Cost about £3500 at the time, which was more than many 500s. So, they were like hen's teeth: I have only seen 2 others in the UK, and 3 or 4 in Rome. With the box set, the total length is a smidge under 7 feet, the width is 4 feet... Yes, 4 feet wide, for a 125cc!

In London I used to have motorcycle couriers stop next to me and say "What's that?! How does it handle? How much are they?". Thing is, being so wide I doubt it would have been any good for them!

Single cylinder, 4 valves, 4-stroke, automatic choke (luxury!), CVT, all hidden away in that fully-faired body. 0-60 in 8 seconds, 80mph on the flat, 90 down a hill on the A3 past Guildford. The fully-adjustable handling was surprising; I had a rather silly race with a tarted-up Cinquecento Sporting on the Cromwell Road in London that was won by virtue of me being able to comfortably maintain 80mph on a sweeping bend... into a 30mph limit :oops: I think that ends the mystery of why they put restrictions on new riders...

When I was having lessons on a Yamaha 125, I would get back to the riding school, get on my Aprilia and it felt as smooth as a Rolls Royce after the harsh engine and ride of the common-or-garden 125s.

I remember a mate buying a new Norman Nippy Moplod in 60's .. we went all over the place on it .. dual seat, gears, 3 I think.
It actually went very well, close to 40 mph flat out favourable conditions (no, not down 1:4 !!) .. real exciting at that age, freedom to roam !!
============ Ok it is a NoPlod but at 16 .. she'd be a looker !! :-
