I had one of the very first of these in the country, in metallic red, but with the box set of the one shown here in champagne, with a low windscreen (didn't like the look of the big one):
It looks a bit odd in the pictures, but they are gorgeous in real life. Cost about £3500 at the time, which was more than many 500s. So, they were like hen's teeth: I have only seen 2 others in the UK, and 3 or 4 in Rome. With the box set, the total length is a smidge under 7 feet, the width is 4 feet... Yes, 4 feet wide, for a 125cc!
In London I used to have motorcycle couriers stop next to me and say "What's that?! How does it handle? How much are they?". Thing is, being so wide I doubt it would have been any good for them!
Single cylinder, 4 valves, 4-stroke, automatic choke (luxury!), CVT, all hidden away in that fully-faired body. 0-60 in 8 seconds, 80mph on the flat, 90 down a hill on the A3 past Guildford. The fully-adjustable handling was surprising; I had a rather silly race with a tarted-up Cinquecento Sporting on the Cromwell Road in London that was won by virtue of me being able to comfortably maintain 80mph on a sweeping bend... into a 30mph limit
I think that ends the mystery of why they put restrictions on new riders...
When I was having lessons on a Yamaha 125, I would get back to the riding school, get on my Aprilia and it felt as smooth as a Rolls Royce after the harsh engine and ride of the common-or-garden 125s.
