I thought you said it was a virus and therefore we knew everything!

We knew a decent amount about it from the start, we didn't know if effectively spread via droplets or not. Because it's a new virus we couldn't know that.

We knew masks reduce transmission of droplets, but that they don't block all of them. We didn't know if that made enough of a difference to make a difference at the start, it turns out it probably does.

We didn't know if masks in general use would reduce transmission, because it's really hard to study that at scale and as it's never been done at a population level before. It turns out it probably does help.

Well actually it doesn't. Not by a long shot.
We have never worn face nappies for the flu.
So no reason to wear them now. Apart from kow towing to dictatorial government and media hype.
