I have heard that said, but the numbers of police supporting being armed will increase where and when it becomes essential.
Police are obviously very vulnerable without fairly powerful arms - tasers or handguns, therefore so is the rest of the public.
I still think of the policeman (also an ex soldier) guarding Westminster who died bravely trying to stop a knife man, as an example of the need for more armed police.
If you think all UK police should be armed with firearms then you're going to lose the 2 thirds that the other 1 third think shouldn't be armed, because they'll never pass the strict testing & training they have to go through.
