How long does your mot have to be left to tax your car ? 1 day ? 1 complete month ? etc

Mot has to be valid on the date of when you tax it from so, just one day will get you a years tax. Basically has to be valid on the first day of the month in which the tax starts. If, say, it expires on 29th of November, you can’t tax it from 1st December even if you apply when the mot is still valid.

Sorry, misunderstood, I thought algas meant - how soon after having it pass an MOT, before he can tax it.

'Basically has to be valid on the first day of the month in which the tax starts.' - Not sure I agree with that.... So long as you have a valid MOT, on the day you apply for tax, it is all that is needed. If you MOT on the 15th December, with no valid MOT before that, apply for tax on the 15th, then the tax will begin on the 1st of December.
