On my van the gas compartment is sealed from the vans habitation unit so that in the event of a leak no gas can get in, but it is vented from underneath, the cooker., fridge and gas heater are also vented to outside.
All electric circuits are also protected, gas and electric can be lethal. I have a safety check on my van every year before the start of the camping season, well worth the £80 fee.
